Delhi’s oldest bakery is here to quench your hunger!

At 11 a.m. on a Monday, one of Delhi’s oldest bakeries greets you with the aroma of newly baked bread, cookies, and cakes. Defence Bakery, established by the late Jagdish Mitra Dhingra in 1962, is located in the heart of Delhi’s Defence Colony market.

One of Delhi’s earliest bakeries, patisseries, and confectioneries is Defence Bakery. Defence Bakery was founded in 1962 by the late Jagdish Mitra Dhingra, and we have grown ever since due to their honest and direct business philosophy. For a long time, the father-son hotelier trio of Dilip Kumar, Tushar, and Gaurav created novel baked goods that satisfied Delhi’s discriminating taste. We constantly innovate to remain one step ahead of their competitors today, thanks to the inspiration and guidance of their promoters and Cordon Bleu Chef, Mr Tushar Dhingra. Creativity, tenacity, and a professional commitment to responsible growth and development for the benefit of the community are among Defence Bakery’s core principles.

Visitors have always enjoyed the bakery’s treats, and when whole wheat bread was first introduced in the early 1990s, it was met with a resounding success. Lines would develop outside the bakery every day around 1:30 p.m. for freshly baked whole wheat bread.

They make high-quality, moderately priced baked goods. They offer common bread types like multigrain, wholewheat, and sourdough, as well as a selection of rustic crusty bread that is unique to daily European cuisine and is increasing in popularity with their customers. They sell a wide range of cakes, pastries, confectionery, viennoiserie, and snacks, as well as a large collection of bespoke presents, holiday baskets, and other products for both personal and commercial use.

Although there is always fierce competition due to the presence of five other bakeries within the Defence Colony neighborhood, previous customers of the bakery include celebrities such as actors Nutan and Hema Malini. Furthermore, the sealing campaign has significantly harmed business; walk-in clients have decreased, and business has decreased despite the fact that the clientele has stayed largely loyal.

Despite increased business, the bakery has maintained its dedication to high standards. In May 2016, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) collected bread from several Delhi bakeries as part of a survey to search for potassium bromate, an additive found in bread improvers that may cause cancer.

Defence Bakery stood out in that research because none of its four tested items carried the chemical. In the upcoming months, the brothers now have plans to open at least 10 additional locations in Delhi NCR. Additionally, there are plans to convert the Defence Colony branch into a cafe and bakery.

They presently sell their products online as well as in South Delhi’s Defence Colony Market, Panchseel, and GK 2 M Block Market. Their devoted customer base has allowed them to grow into the manufacturing and retail sectors. They have also established Alma Bakery and Cafe in Noida, which is inspired by thoughtful eating and food production industry practises.
